In 2025, WICONA presented itself at BAU Munich with an exhibition stand that impressively combined innovation and sustainability. At the heart of the concept was the forward-thinking principle of urban mining: Extracting valuable materials from existing urban structures such as buildings and infrastructure rather than mining or producing them anew.

The concept found its visual expression in the striking façade of the exhibition stand, whose shredder aesthetic served as a powerful metaphor for transformation: It demonstrated compellingly how something new and valuable can emerge from old façades – a symbol for sustainable change in architecture.

Alongside this metaphorical interpretation of urban mining, a range of environmentally conscious measures were implemented throughout the stand:

  • The façade was made from Trevira CS, a material that will be collected after the trade fair and recycled into new insulation materials.

  • Primarily untreated wood was used, which can be reused more effectively than printed or coated materials due to its natural properties.

  • By omitting parts of the flooring, approximately 5.2 tonnes of material were saved.

  • During construction, regional companies were deliberately engaged to minimise transport distances and thus CO₂ emissions.

  • The furniture of the exhibition stand, which has been used for WICONA multiple times, is stored in a depot awaiting its next deployment.

  • To avoid additional waste, vinyl graphics were largely eliminated. Key messages were communicated via the 7×4 m LED wall and LED stripes.
